New Play Development: The Killing Jar by Jennifer Lynne Roberts

Opportunities to truly guide and nurture a new play are few and far between in our fast-paced new play development industry.  So the New Play Development Factory, happening over three weekends, with plenty of support for re-writes and feedback, is a breath of fresh air.  I’ve already had several inspiring and fruitful conversations with playwright Jennifer Lynne Roberts about her play, The Killing Jar, that I will be directing.  We’re both thrilled to take the play to new levels.  The New Play Development Factory, May 24th-June 9th, 2013, at Dragon Productions in Redwood City.  More info and tickets here.

Upcoming Performance: A Breach Outside the Furnace Walls, Again, Again

In a deal with the devil, who really wins?  Written by my friend and colleague Rory Strahan-Mauk, this contemporary verse play takes us on a journey through the life of Zach, a young engineer who makes a fatal bet with the devil.  He tries to create a new technology that will heal all sickness, but the government uses his research for more nefarious purposes.  When the devil comes to collect, he is forced to prove the benefits of his machine outweigh its tremendous destructive potential.  Performances on May 24th and 25th, at 10pm, at the San Jose Rep’s Emerging Artists Lab.  More info here.

Educational: TheatreWorks Young Playwrights Projects

I just wrapped up the last of three Young Playwrights Projects that I directed short plays for.  Each of the student playwright groups from Los Altos, Palo Alto, and Willow Glen High Schools had unique and inspiring voices.  I am so proud of TheatreWorks, my hometown theater company, and resident playwright Jake Arky, for continuing to provide an excellent first playwriting experience for so many students.

Upcoming performance: Opening Day by Jake Arky

Hold onto your hat, this one’s a home run!  Join us at City Lights on April 9th for an evening of short plays by local playwrights.  I’ll be directing Jake Arky’s Opening Day—a tense game of cat-and-mouse between a bartender and her last customer on the eve of the SF Giants’ Opening Day.  At City Lights in downtown San Jose.  All tickets $10 at the door.  More info here.

Educational: Los Altos High School Young Playwrights Project

On April 4th, I’m looking forward to returning to my former high school in Los Altos to work with the current students.  Through a program with TheatreWorks, the students have created original 10 minute plays.  Myself and other professional directors and actors will help the writers develop their work and present each play as a staged reading.

Upcoming Performance: Two Operas in Two Acts

On March 10th, I am staging a very special event for Opera San Jose and the Carmel Music Society.  Focusing on the season theme, “Secrets Revealed”, we are presenting two abbreviated, chamber operas, Il Trovatore and Die Fledermaus.  Opera San Jose’s resident artists will be featured in both pieces, which will take place in the beautiful Sunset Center in Carmel.  For more information and tickets, visit the Carmel Music Society at www.carmelmusic.org

Upcoming performance: A Dark and Stormy Christmas Story at SJRep’s Emerging Artists Lab

I am creating a dark fairy tale that will haunt your holidays–and strengthening my playwrighting skills at the same time.  A collaboration with local writers and directors Steve Boyle and Peter Hsieh, this alternative holiday piece will explore ancient winter folk tales, and why we celebrate light at the darkest time of year.  Nov. 30th and Dec. 1st, 10:45pm, after the SJRep’s mainstage performance of A Christmas Carol.  Learn more about SJREAL.

Upcoming Performance: Christmas Shorts at City Lights Theater Company

I am thrilled to be one of five South Bay artists each directing a short play for CLTC’s Christmas Shorts.  Each short play is a twisted look at a holiday we all love.  Nov. 21-Dec. 23rd at City Lights in downtown San Jose.  Join us for some alternative holiday fun!

Opera San Jose is tackling the hot-button issue of bullying with their new educational touring production of The Billy Goats Gruff.  I am directing, designing, and having a blast with a cast of fabulous singers from the Opera San Jose chorus.
